Thai Cooking School Phuket was founded by Sally, whose passion for Thai cuisine was kindled during her childhood. Sally has vivid memories of assisting in her family's curry-on-rice shop, a modest Thai-style fast-casual eatery that catered to villagers awaiting passage across the river from Phang Nga to Phuket in southern Thailand. This shop was established in 1942, long before the construction of the Sarasin Bridge. Working alongside her grandmother and mother, Sally tirelessly participated in the preparation of over 30 different dishes each day. Her responsibilities involved scraping coconuts, pounding curry paste, preparing ingredients, and washing dishes. Although these tasks may have seemed tedious at the time, they instilled in her a remarkable patience and a willingness to embrace repetitive duties that others might find tiresome. Sally consistently strived for perfection, dedicating ample time to complete each task flawlessly.
Despite pursuing various career paths after completing her university education, none of them truly resonated with Sally. It was her unwavering passion for sharing the wonders of Thai cuisine with the world that ultimately led her to establish Thai Cooking School Phuket (Kata Thai Cooking Class). The small eatery that ignited her love for Thai food has since transformed into a magnificent beachside restaurant located at the base of the iconic Sarasin Bridge in Baan Tha Nun, Phang Nga Province. Today, the restaurant is managed by Sally's cousins and continues to attract customers from all corners of the globe.
Thai cuisine is renowned for its explosive flavors that combine sweet, spicy, sour, and savory tastes in a harmonious balance. From the aromatic herbs and spices like lemongrass, galangal, and Thai basil, to the creative use of coconut milk, lime juice, and fish sauce, every dish is not only rich with deliciousness and health benefits, but also tells a story of tradition, culture, and innovation. Whether it's the fiery kick of a Tom Yum, the creamy indulgence of a Green Curry, or the tangy delight of Pad Thai noodles, Thai food never fails to leave a lasting impression.
The cuisine has its roots in the indigenous food culture of the Thai people who migrated from southern China to present-day Thailand. They brought their culinary traditions, which included the use of rice as a staple food, the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, and the use of herbs and spices in cooking. Later from the 13th-19th centuries, the cuisine was influenced by peoples of various cultures, including the Indian traders, Chinese immigrants, and Thai royalties. Thailand’s regional diversity also contributes to the variety of dishes. Each region has its unique culinary specialties influenced by local ingredients, climate, and cultural traditions. Today, Thai cuisine continues to evolve, embracing global influences while staying rooted in its traditional flavors and techniques. Its rich history and diverse culinary traditions make it a beloved and internationally recognized culinary heritage.
